  Choosing Data Collectors

When deciding who will gather the data, consider the expertise needed. Data collectors need to be familiar with and skilled in the methods that are being used. You may want to make arrangements with your CLIP Facilitator or CLIP Guide to have a preparation session for those who will be using data collection methods that are new to them or to be sure everyone uses a consistent approach.

Data collectors agree to follow the protocols that the CLIP develops for the particular data collection method. It’s important that data collectors gather data as accurately as possible. It’s a good idea to tape record individual interviews and the conversations of focus groups.

Data collectors need to be aware of their own perspectives on the inquiry question and make a conscious decision to set those aside as they gather data. Avoid using data collectors who will be directly affected by the outcomes of the study if you think that they cannot remain unbiased.
