Zaretta Hammond

Zaretta Hammond is the chief executive officer of Community Solutions Network, Inc., a non-profit organization offering collaboration support, technical assistance, and evaluation services to community-based non-profits in the San Francisco Bay Area. She also directs the organization’s Community Literacy Initiative, which aims to support community-based efforts to improve reading and writing skills for children in inner-city communities.

In addition to her work with Community Solutions Network, Inc., Ms. Hammond is the professional development specialist at the Bay Area Coalition for Equitable Schools (BayCES) in Oakland, CA. She provides professional development in ways to improve instruction to close the achievement gap for African American and Latino students for teachers and instructional leaders in new small schools. She has also written extensively about these issues over the past six years.

Ms. Hammond has worked as an evaluation consultant with InSites since the early 1990s. Her areas of expertise include qualitative evaluation of school reform initiatives, teacher change initiatives, and collaborative partnerships.

Ms. Hammond is a writer and former classroom teacher. She has taught writing at the high school and community college levels. She holds an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction in secondary English Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a B.A. from New York University in English Literature.
